Veterinary Services

Animal Health Care

We have a team of experienced veterinarians and animal care specialists who ensure that the animals stay in their best shape. In addition to caring for the zoo animals, they conduct educational programs and treat animals brought into our facilities. Our team includes the following personnel:

Hyena, © M. Dominic
▪ Deputy Veterinary Director
▪ Assistant Veterinary Director
▪ Veterinary Assistant Surgeon
▪ Junior Veterinary Officers (2)
▪ Veterinary Assistants (2)

As the overall person in charge of the zoo animals, the Deputy Director acts as the liaison between the animal husbandry department and the Forest Department. Every morning our staff inspects the animals including their health, sanitation, and hygiene. In case of any concerns, the matter is brought to the attention of the Assistant Director or the Veterinary Assistant Surgeon for immediate action. Depending on the condition of the animal, the animal is either shifted to the in-patient ward or kept in the animal house and treated. The Deputy Director checks the feed stores for quality every morning and releases it for distribution after thorough disinfection.
The team takes prophylactic or preventive measures like regular fecal sample examinations of individual animals and random sample examinations of animals every month, and also carries out periodic or specific de-worming of animals.

Educational Tour of Veterinarians

Apart from the regular checkups, our veterinarians conduct regular classes for the interns from the College of Veterinary Science and for the undergraduates from the Veterinary Colleges from neighbouring states. The Deputy Director conducts classes on disease management, restrains, and breeding management.

Conservation, Rescue, Breeding, and Research

We have successfully bred a number of endangered species at the zoo in recent years. Some of our notable successes include the following:
▪ Big cats - Asiatic lion and tigers
▪ Deer - mouse, hog, swamp, black buck, and samber
▪ Cockatoos, pheasants, grey parrot, painted stork, white ibis, and emus.
▪ Jackal
▪ Palm civet
▪ Sloth bear

We have also had a very successful pheasant breeding program that includes breeding of the following pheasants: silver, golden, ring-necked, khalij, and Reeves pheasant. Other successfully bred birds include the white pea fowl and the jungle fowl.

We have successfully hand-reared olive baboons, white tiger cubs, and lion cubs. Our team of veterinarians at the zoo is assisting the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) with wild life conservation
under a project assigned by the Central Zoo Authority. The efforts resulted in the successful birth, through artificial insemination, of a spotted deer fawn. Our team participates in rescue and rehabilitation of wild life on a regular basis. Some of our recent rescues include capturing and rehabilitating an elephant, rescuing bear cubs, a sloth bear, and a pack of jackals.
