Crocodiles, © M. Damania Reptiles hold the ignoble distinction of being one of the most misunderstood and persecuted animals, worshiped by some but mostly feared and rarely respected. Our 200+ reptilian friends hope to remedy that by not only fascinating you with their beautiful colors and sizes but also by sharing facts with you about their benefits to the environment.
Be prepared to face the mighty King Cobra, which at almost 20 feet long can lift part of its body and see you eye to eye. Contrary to common belief, snakes are neither slimy nor do they attack humans without provocation. Of the 2900 species of snakes in the world, only 250 species have a bite that is fatal to humans. The hooded Indian cobra, the beautiful Russell's viper, giant rock and reticulated pythons, and the water monitor lizards are kept in open enclosures. Common Krait, © M. Hasan
Near the children's corner, two giant tortoises flaunt their wisdom and grace that comes with their long lifespan - they are 75 years old but can live to be more than 100. Several star tortoises and fresh water turtles along with their reptile cousins - the gharials, muggers and the estuarine crocodiles - reside in the open pools. Monitor lizards and chameleon occupy the neigbouring open-air exhibits.
