White tigers, © K. Rao Known by many as Sher Khan, the arch-nemesis of Mowgli in the Jungle Book, the Bengal tiger lives in a vast open-air enclosure with his large family including nine white tigers. You can see a pride of majestic lions too, both Asiatic as well as African. The African lions have a bigger mane and are generally a bit larger in size than their Asiatic cousins. In their specially designed habitats with rocky cliffs and trees, the panthers, jaguars, and pumas from North and South America show off their beautiful colors and physical agility.
Don't forget to visit your canine friends - the wolves, jackals, foxes, and hyenas. Indian wolves are currently on the endangered list with only two to three thousand remaining in India. Our zoo is home to the Himalayan black bear and the Malayan sun bear. Bears are highly intelligent animals with an excellent long-term memory. Even though using bears for street entertainment is illegal under Indian law, it can still be seen in many places. If you see it happen, then please help by calling the authorities.
Our smaller carnivores include the playful otters and the sneaky ratels, also known as honey badgers. Did you know that the ratel has been named the most fearless animal in the Guinness Book of World Records for a number of years? They are well known for their snake-killing abilities, which they do by grabbing a snake behind the head with their jaws and then killing it. Ratels can devour an entire five foot snake in 15 minutes.
