Hi,

I'm one of the visitors like you and i just want to say that I agree with your below concern totally.
I visited the zoo last Saturday i.e on 14th Jan and had the same experience. People throwing stones at animals including the White Tiger just to strike a pose when the animal stares...
I've seen children throwing big big rocks on the sleeping alligators only to be confronted by their angry parents when i stopped them who to my shock were supporting their children s acts. Worse, the staff responsible to monitor these are totally oblivious of all this.
I hope the authorities will take necessary action to prevent this kind of animal abuse in a place which is suppose to be a haven for them.

Thanks
Abhinand J G J

kkak52 wrote:

This was an email I wrote regarding my first visit to the zoo. I just couldn't stand the teasing of animals there...

Sir,

Today (Sunday, 28th Nov 2010), I visited the zoo and was impressed with the cleanliness and the maintenance despite the huge size of the zoo. But what hurt me the most was that majority of the visitors do not bother a bit also about the animals. For them, its just like visiting some show.

I am an animal lover, and I really do not like to see animals in cages. But what hurts me the most is that so many people tease the animals and try to get it excited to satisfy their selfish fun. Today I told several people not to shout at the animals or feed them.
There were some people trying to feed popcorn to some white peafowl. I told them not to do it. They didnt listen. I went up and told the guard sitting nearby, and when he went up to them, I think they listened.
There were adults and children trying to throw stones at crocodiles to see them move. That was pathetic. Children trying to boo at animals can be understood because they are young and have not been taught to love the animals. But what can be done if the adults do it? Aren't the children learning from them? I told these people too, but they didn't listen.
The wolves in the cages looked so tired and were sleeping. There were a bunch of guys trying to clap loudly and get them to move.
The worst case came up in the case of the lonely tiger. Being our National Animal, doesn't it deserve some respect? Already the species is so endangered and are dying in the wild. I was wondering why it has to be caught and kept in display if people are only trying to scream and shout at it. Better die free than be ill-treated under captivity. Today so many people gathered and really tested its patience. There were some middle aged men shouting and waving at it, and not a single one paid heed to my request to leave the animal alone. It finally lost its cool and made a big angry dash towards the spectators. There was a furry movement and a huge splash as it jumped at the water moat. I felt really bad when I saw it retreating back from the water, helpless. When animals attack people in zoos, they are treated as bad natured. But seldom does anyone bother to ask how these animals are treated by the visitors.
I understand we cannot teach basic behavior etiquettes to the public. But isn't it possible to do something to reduce these 'malpractices'?
I saw just one main sign board which mentioned about the law against teasing animals. I believe there MUST be a signboard at several more places. It might take away the beauty of the place, but it is definitely required. If possible, place a signboard at every major enclosure so that atleast 1 out of 100 people bother to read and take it seriously.
Instruct the guards/zoo-keepers/security to be more vigilant and responsible towards the animals. It would be a very effective idea to station more personnel during the peak hours at the places where the teasing is more common. People should be reprimanded strictly for any such behavior.
Levying fines against teasing/throwing objects etc need to be considered.
Today was my first visit to this place; and I understand these things are occurring on a daily basis. Its high time that these animals are given some justice.

I kindly request you to take stern actions to provide respite to these beautiful creatures against the unruly behaviour of the public.

Yours sincerely,
Ajith

I'm from AP and by profession I stay in Bangalore and interested in participating for the voluntary work of animals.

I feel any of the below points might bring some change in the life of animals and the attitude of visitors to the zoo.

1) It could be great if some volunteer can take the ownership representing this site/forum and communicate with the zoo authorities about the points or plans we discuss in this forum.

2) I also feel interacting people (especially small kids) with the animal infants, would raise more interest, awareness and animal friendly behavior in them and their parents.

3) To make this forum more active, may be some basic advertising from any social networking sites like just a few mails/posts/images/videos about the zoo and its maintenance can bring some change.

Guys if you feel these points aren’t much useful, please post your comments at: boopeshpotluri@gmail.com

- A small group of thoughtful people could bring the change.

I visited the Nehru Zoological Park today(7/10/2011) was really upset to see the lack of management & the condition of animals as they seemed depressed & ill.I was even more frustrated to see the treatment of animals by visitors who teased them a lot. I saw them throwing mineral water bottles at the lion's enclosure & those bottles were picked by one of the lions & once the bottle was stuck in its canines too.At the Hippo's enclosure young children were throwing stones to bring the hippo out of the water.Even the water pools at the enclosures were filled with dirt & algae. I wanted to complain to any guards nearby about the teasing of lions but couldn't find any one nearby. Even the langurs & other monkey species were in bad conditions. If the zoo could provide any awareness program in discouraging the visitors against teasing the animals & respect the wildlife of our country it would have been a lot beneficial. Even I'll also be happy to volunteer & take time out to help the animals.

Message from razarizvi

Dear Zoo Friends,

A few years ago, I had stumbled upon the website of the Hyderabad zoo, a park I enjoyed visiting as a child, and was disappointed by the website's poor quality, especially given the fact that we live in a 'Hitech city'. So I decided to make this new website on a volunteer basis and have since maintained it on my own. Since I permanently reside in Houston (Texas USA), communication with the zoo officials has been non-existent except for a few emails. The response to this website by the zoo officials can at best be described as apathetic - they don't seem to care.

I am currently visiting my home town Hyderabad for a week after 7 years. I visited the zoo office for the first time today with the hope of sharing ideas, receiving documentation about the zoo's progress, setting a liaison between the public and the zoo, etc. I was first directed to Mr. G. Vasant Mohan's office (S.F.S., Assistant Conservator of Forests). This zoo official, to my dismay, has never seen the zoo website. When asked about any documentation for the zoo's future plans, he responded that he had none. When asked about any documentation for the zoo's achievements for the past year, he again responded that he had none. To summarize, he did not seem to care about the concept of a zoo website or to inform me about the zoo's activities.

Upon insisting on meeting someone else, I was directed to Mr. Mohammad Abdul Waheed (I.F.S, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Curator). This official, at 2 p.m. today, was busy with lunch. After waiting 25 minutes outside his office, one of his assistants informed us that we will have to wait much longer. So we left. I have been told that the zoo director will be available tomorrow (April 16th, Saturday) at 11 a.m. I am debating whether to take the effort to visit the zoo or not, as my stay in Hyderabad is short.

The fact of the matter is that for any organization to function effectively, there needs to be an incentive, a driving force towards progress. In the case of a government run zoo, we either need public pressure to improve and/or officials who are passionate about their work. In this case, I am afraid, we have neither of the two. It breaks my heart to receive regular emails from my fellow Hyderabadis who show interest in volunteering for our zoo, and share excellent ideas and suggestions for improvements. Having visited zoos, in New York, Fortworth, Topeka, Houston, Al-Ain, among others, I can assure you that ours has the most potential, given the large size, moderate climate, and the amazing lakeside location.

The zoo will only be as good as we the citizenry want it to be. After all, Hyderabad zoo is a public zoo i.e. your zoo. Please feel free to share your views.

Cheers,
Raza

P.S. Next time I watch the show 'Office Office', I promise not to laugh at the Pankaj Kapoor character. I can fully sympathize with him now. :-)

I'm a student in Florida, USA, working on a project and was wondering if I could get some information.

It is my understanding that one of our zoo's elephants who died of old age last year, was the only elephant born at your zoo. This would have been in 1946-06-01. Any clue who her parents were? What was her original name? We knew her as "Mary" in the US. When did she leave your zoo? I know she was in the US by 1952/53. She was well loved here and is greatly missed.

How many elephants are at the zoo now?

What are the names, gender and ages?

Thank you for answering any questions you can.

Thank you.
